We've never heard of dragon boat racing, what should we expect?

What is a dragon boat?
Dragon boats are 46-foot, double-wide canoe-like vessels that seat 20 paddlers and one drummer. Each dragon boat will also have a race organizer official on board to steer and assist.
How many people on a team?
Twenty-one – 20 paddlers plus one “drummer.” You may include 3 alternates. All teams must have at least 8 female paddlers and no more than 10 paddlers can be between the ages of 14 and 15 (no paddlers under 14 permitted).
Are there any restrictions on who can be on the team?
All teams must have at least 8 female paddlers and no more than 10 paddlers can be between the ages of 14 and 15 (no paddlers under 14 permitted).
How do we register our team?
Click on any of the Register Now buttons and fill out the form to register. Registration will be closed when we have 52 teams registered.
When will my team be officially registered?
Teams will be considered registered when the team captain has completed the initial registration form and all team members have registered at the registration site. The first 10 teams registered will get preference of open practice times. Life happens, so if you need to cancel and it is before April 30, we will issue a refund, less 10{42cd8b3d1ae2c20abe8f156f632539890a1e0d5e4d6a44f14f0a2afa4638a585} and registration fees. If you cancel after April 30, we will only issue a refund if a team can be found as a replacement.
Will we be able to practice before the race?
Practice sessions will be held May 19-21. Each team receives one practice slot. Practice session selection is based on order of registration. Exact dates and times will be announced closer to the event.
What time are the races?
The festival is an all-day event. Opening Ceremonies are at 8:30 am. The first heat for Dragon Boat races will kick off at approximately 8:50 a.m.

Can individuals join a team?

We don’t have enough people to fill a boat, how can we still participate?
Please send an email to, Paddle@SpartaDragonBoat.com and we will do our best to get you connected with others looking for people. You can also “sponsor” a boat that includes patrons, customers and members of your team. Please like our Facebook page and follow the conversation to see who is looking for members
What happens if it starts raining?
The festival and racing will go ahead if it is raining. Generally, the only time the racing is postponed is if lightning or high winds occur.
Is there a fee to attend the festival?
No, there is no fee to attend. It is open to the public so bring your friends and family to enjoy this community event!
Will there be food and refreshments available on site?
Yes! The Lake Mohawk Country Club will have plenty of great food and drinks available for purchase. This year you’ll have the option to pre-order food from Lake Mohawk Country Club and have it delivered right to your tent! You are welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages.
How do we benefit from participating?
Dragon boat racing provides your group with an adrenaline-pumping and competitive event that rewards synchronicity and teamwork. The money raised through this event goes to the Sparta Education Foundation which distributes the funds through grants to Sparta Public Schools.
What if our team can't make it, can we get a refund?
If once a team is registered and they need to cancel, we will refund the registration fees less 10{42cd8b3d1ae2c20abe8f156f632539890a1e0d5e4d6a44f14f0a2afa4638a585} and the registration fees if the team notifies the Sparta Education Foundation prior to April 30, 2022. After April 30, teams will be reimbursed the registration fees less 10{42cd8b3d1ae2c20abe8f156f632539890a1e0d5e4d6a44f14f0a2afa4638a585} and the registration fees, only if a replacement team can be named. Please understand that on May 1, we must commit to the number of boats and personnel from the race company and this decision is driven by the number of boats registered.
